Courtenay grew up in San Francisco with an English mother and Australian father. She spent a few high school years in Berkeley as well, before attending college at the University of Redlands and then San Francisco State. She majored in Broadcast Communications with a minor in theatre. Courtenay spent a season in L.A. working on HBO's "Tales From The Crypt". There, she trained extensively in boxing and kick-boxing at Venice's now defunct World Karate Training Center.

Courtenay returned to San Francisco to attend the American Conservatory Theatre and study voice acting with The Voice Factory's Taylor Korobow. She was a founding instructor at Gorilla Sports, a popular boxing/spinning/yoga gym that branched out to Manhattan Beach and Chicago.

In 1998 Courtenay moved back to Los Angeles, and began working steadily in voiceovers. Recently she has crossed over into on-camera work with roles on primetime TV and in feature films.
